Hi. New user from Canada. I would like to build a radio panel and then autopilot panel. Unfortunately I purchased quite a few KY-40's and I cant figure out how to make them work. One fellow gave a detailed description in the forums on using these but for now it is beyond my ability's. My question is- It looks like you recommend EC12 encoder, with 24 position. I can find lots on Ebay that are 20 position. Will this matter?

Welcome!

I also bought some EC-11 (20 positions) encoders from China. They work just fine.

KY-40 encoders work fine (just like the other ones you mention).

Be sure with the KY40 to connect the + of the KY40 module to the +V of the Arduino (as well of course as the ground).

This + is not needed (nor available) with the other encoders.

So: KY40: connect +, connect grnd, the SW is your push switch and the other to (clock and data) are the rotery encoder itself.

Only thing I'd advise when buying encoders: I'd advise the ones who come with nuts and washers as these ones do have a threat on their shaft so you can mount them on your panel.

They are not that expensive but if you've been waiting for 8 weeks and finally they arrive and you see that it's not possible to mount them.... :w00t:
