Are there two different types of the Max7219 modules available? I think there is one type where the 7 segment displays plug into the module board so they can be replaced if a segment fails. The second type has the 7 segment displays soldered to the module board and cannot be so easily replaced in the event of a failure. If I am correct can someone send me a link where I can buy the replaceable type at a good price. Ebay would be ideal. Thanks

Your right !

A additional fact is that these removeable Tubes are verry interesting to build individual panels....
If you need for example a 3 Diggit Display or a 6 Diggit Block you can buy it and then you need to wire it to the Max Chip.
Normaly you need here a blank Max Chip but this is a bit advanced to solder it..... With these removeable Displays you can pull the "4 Block" simply off and then you connect your cables on the now empty pins.
With these technic you can also place your Displays indipendent from the Tube itself ( If there is not enough space behind the Panel)

Summary.... I High recommend those Tubes !
Good Luck !

Hello

I starting to build slowly my 737 cockpit. i already by all the led and button, encoder...
and now i have to buy max7219 led module. as you explain i will buy some, who led are not soldering on the board because not all display got 8 digits.
first do you have a link for white led modules and is it 0,36 inches or 0,56 inch for mcp panel
and second i think that 2 or 3 digit module don't have the same pin-out so is there a tuto to explain how to change 4 digits led with 3 or 2 digit led?
' I'm not an electronic man  '

regards

Hi

A real tutorial is not exist.... I´m sorry i plan for it since 2 Years.... But i´m not a good tutorial writer

Basic Logic is still easy.....

Your MaxTube when you remove a 4 Diggit Block have a empty Connector Row of 2x6 Pins ( a 4 Diggit Block have 12 Pins finaly)
These Pins are 7x Segement Pins ( A-G ) 1x Decimal Point ( DP) and 4x Diggit Pins (DIG1 - DIG4)

Your Display you order got a other placement Pin logic... but the same "basic" System.... It also get 7X Segment.... 1X Decimalpoint ( If a DP is included in that Display) and so much Digit Pins as used.... a 3 Diggit Display will have 3x Diggit Pin (DIG1-DIG3 ) for example.

Finaly.... You must check the Datasheet of your Display..... And You must check the Pin Logic of the Max tube .... And then you need to wire all Lines.
So MaxTube SEG-A must wired to SEG-A Pin on the Display..... SEG-B to SEG-B and so on.

If you use a 5,6,7,or 8 Digit Display you need to pull off the Second 4Block on the Tube.... And you need the Diggit Pins from the Other Side ( DIG1-DIG4) , too.
In That Case DIG1 of right Block means DIG5 of your Display for example.

That sound hard but it is not difficult if you do it 1-2 times.

******
about Displays.... You have to google.... Not know your location and if my used shops deliver in your country.....
IMPORTANT:
1. You need Displays that are "common Cathode" (Common Annode will NOT WORK with MaxTubes )
2. You should choice for Displays with the logic i told you.
For example a 2 Diggit Display is available with 10 Pins or with 18 Pins at some manifactures.... I Recommend the 10 Pin system here. ( To prevent double wire work)
( Basic Rule..... Pin Number should be 8+Number of Diggits ..... so a 3 Diggit Display got 11 Pins ..... a 5 Diggit Display got 13 Pins and so on)
If a Display got additional signs like a Double Point ::::: in a Clock then it got 1 pin more.... thats no problem... We simply not use it !
Good Luck !

Hi,

I do have here a quick-tutorial for the modification from (2x)4 Digit red to (1x) 5 digit white. It is a pdf-file and written in german. But with Google-Translator it should not be difficult to understand it.
Write here your email if you are interested.

Edit: The link to Ali above is ok. Look out for the green pcb's. They have the removable digits
Or look here:
