Pretty Shure Stephans links give you all the information !..... You should read them!

But in short words....

1. Wrong:
The Number of this DropDown only mean " How many Displays are set to THIS Device Port"
If you set ONE Display you choose "1" (If you set 4 Displays on 4 different Device entrys 3Pins all single without chain then ALL 4 Devices must have "1" ... Cause always only ONE Display is set at ONE Deviceentry)
If you make a chain with 4 Displays for example then you must set "4" cause now on this Device ( 3 Pins) are set 4 Displays in a row !

2. Not recommend
You can split 5V and GRD ... Maby you can split CLK, too.... But DN cant be split.... Cause it support the Data in a array that MUST get through the Displays in a correct sequence.
Whatever a Breadboard is not recomend in your final System..... You shoul solder all wires finaly.... Specialy in Max7219 Displays a little wrong contact in case of touching a wire occure in a Crash and you have to restart the Homecockpit every 5 Minutes !

Finaly.... The DN Line MUST chained from Display to Display..... If you do this already i recommend to use a 4 wire block and chaining the CLK,CS and GRD, too..... Same workflow but you have a garantee working system and its more tidy like you split the lines with a breadboard system !
Good Luck !
