I'm the newest of the new, sorry. We all have to start somewhere at some time.

I've searched as best I can, but have found conflicting posts - Can MobiFlight use shift register IC's such as the 74HC595?

US - TEXAS INSTRUMENTS SN74HC595N 8 BIT SIPO SHIFT REGISTER, DIP-16

Deutsch - SODIAL (R) Nacht25pcs 74HC595 IC 8-Bit Shift Register DIP-16 TEXAS Kreis

It's not a problem. I believe that the MAX7219 is useable and they cost less than a can of Coke. :D

MobiFlight gives me the one thing that I, so far, haven't been able to do easily, and that is to get a number of 7 segment displays connected to my flight sim (P3d).

For everything else, the Teensy 3.2 works well enough. So, at worst, I'll need a Mega and a Teensy 3.2.

With the two of them I can make something that would cost over $1,000 to buy.

As far as the 74HC595 is concerned, I found a very complete description of its use at http://svglobe.com/ardsimx/wire_reg.html. Using only three pins on your Arduino you may drive up to 64 separate LED's with eight 74HC595's at € 0,50 each. This is by far the most elegant and the cheapest demultiplexer that I have seen! Support for the 74HC595 would indeed be a valuable asset for MobiFlight and for many cockpit builders using it.
