Hi !

It would be much more effiency to control alot of outputs by using shift registers. Like http://www.nxp.com/documents/data_sheet/74HC_HCT595.pdf <- Pdf url.
With 4 I/0 you could handle 24 outputs. What you think ? We have 7segment driver - now its time to upgrade other things :;)

Hi.

I think about those technologys, too.... With a little fix it would be possible to handle 64 LED with only 3 pins (max7219) for example.....
But i stoped planing cause there is some facts against those technics....

Arduinos are realy cheap !
A Direct wire System it´s tidyer like matrixes and its better to find errors !
Things like shiftregisters or led matrix use more power and memory of the real small CPU Core on the Arduino.

I know some user try to maximise efectivity of the Arduinos..... But we need to think about if saving 10$ for a board is a option, if we need more wire-work or if we had a slower and vulnerable system.

BUT
In case of Open Source i read that an other User planing to support some new divices. If he or Sebastian is interested they could build some options like this.
Maby the comunity need to ask for it. Please understand that it´s not posible to impliment a new tool only for one user request it.

Good Luck !
