hi,
it should work. Lot of people use USB hub in connecting Mega-s.
The USB hub usually needs external power. Although if you use only switches without LEDs and 7segments, then 500 mA could be enough for all 3 Mega-s.

Do you know that you can simplify: if($=1,0,1) ?
Use simply: 1-$ :)

I had the same problems with only 2 Megas which were driving some LEDs.

Simple solution: use an active Hub with its own power supply.

Most people forget that on the most motherboards 2 or even 3 USB ports are internally connected to one hub. And then the power is limited or spreaded over all ports.
You must asure that on each (!) USB port the whole 500mA are available, what is only possible with a hub with its own external power supply.

But how to ensure that? Is there any way to test it?

As i said, use an active hub, only then you'll have enough "power" on each port.
On a PCs Motherboard there are let's say 6 USB-Ports available, normally they are connected with the rest over one or two small internal USB-hubs not able to deliver the needed 500mA an all ports at the same time.

So, if you need 8 USBs at the same time, you should be safe if your external active Hub comes with a 4A (20W) Powersupply.
