Hi,

As an example, is it possible to use 1x MAX7291 and of the 8 digits, use one half (4) for HDG and the other half (4) for CRS?

Is it possible to do this?

Or, do I need to use 2x MAX7219 and their respective displays to do this?

Yes, that what you want is possible.

Make a config for the HDG and in the Config Wizard there the DISPLAY tab assign i.e. the first 4 digits for the HDG and then, in another config you can assign the second 4 digits to the CRS.

There seems to be a long delivery time but they use passenger jets as cargo ones so the delivery time is reduced. To germany only 12 days. try it.
Another note: only use the boards with the green PCBs because only the have the plugged displays

in the picture at the link is the MCP panel. I used only 3 MAX7219 for this, I soldered the LED modules myself from two and three digit displays, the rest of the work is done by Mobiflight

Thanks Stephan for your advice. I’ll give it a try when the parts arrive.

Tilc - very nice MCP. Can you advise on how you “made” the front plate and what material used? This is the next hurdle for me.

Pretty sure TILC will tell you this himself.....

Whatever i can give you a short awnser..... This is pretty sure a Acrylglass Plate that is painted. The Labels (Text) is engarved ( maybe by CNC or Laser) .

Basicly we use 2 Systems.....

If Backlight is needed we work with Acrylglass..... High recommend to use "milky" Glass cause here you can read the text also at daytime when no LED is active.
With fully vissible Acryl the Text is darker.

If you not think about backlighting then you can use everything. Most users also have Acryl cause its most cheap and easy to handle..... But you can use Wood or metal, too.
Some users also work with "poster" So a printed picture that is glued on a piece of wood e.g. Here the Label Text and so on is from the picture and you just cut a hole ( in woodplate and picture together) on the spots you like to set a Switch, Display, LED or so.

The second methode is interesting if you plan for a verry cheap and easy cockpit that should have the REAL Dimension but only some single elements like switches.
Here things you not like to build ( e.g. a Motorised gauge) are optical still there in form of the Picture..... Sure Fake and Dummy.... But it looks more real as a empty wood plate.
