Hi,

Is it a way to enable 6 digit 7-segments display (instead of 8) like that one:

Thanks a lot

Hello,

Yes it is possible. You just need a MAX7219 IC and have to wire it like it is described in the data sheet. One Max7219 can support up to 8 Digits.

YES Possible.....

Just 2 Notes:

1. It must be "Common CATHODE" . Mostly those Displays are available all in two different layouts..... Common Cathode and Common Anode.
Get sure you use CATHODE .... Else it will NOT work !

2. Think about Max7219 Tubes ! Buildup a Max7219 Chip by hand can be verry difficult and need good solder skills. Much more comfortable is to use "Tubes" ( Those who have 2x4 Red Displays . There exist 2 kinds.... One with solder Displays.... other with plugged Displays (green PCB mostly).

This is a plugged one ....

Here you can remove the Displays within 1 second and use the now empty Tube as a "controller"
All you need to do now is to wire the 14 Lines from your linked Displays into the now empty conncetors of that Tube ( where the 2x4 was connected before).

EDIT: Check this Video from Karl..... (Starting at Min 20.00) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPKrnKUcAxc
Good Luck !
