40x4 LCDs can be bought for $15.

They can be programmed with MobiFlight (I think), but in V7.10.0 there is not enough GUI width to edit 40 characters.

There is only space to see 36 characters.

I always thoght the Limitation is 24x4 .

If you got a little time please create a issue in Bitbucket.
If not i will do tonight.

My thoughts.... If technical a 40 Display is possible ( i not know this till now) then sure.... We should enlarge the Virtual Setting area to support this !

I know the Arduino libraries support 40 char displays, so the code might not need changes.

The gui changes will the biggest piece of work. I can alpha test my 40x2 display if that helps.

I chose the 40x2 to mimic the Airbus FCU display.

Sebasitan still rework the GUI at the moment.... the newest Beta x.x.16 is the first step.

I already see a early Alpha for a fully new GUI.... Complety based on a new optic. So this should be no Problem for a MF V9 .... the V8 will not include the Big Swap as i know.
Whatever.... the little enlarge of this Area should be a Hotfix.... Not a fully new build !

Expect it come fast if he find a little time next days. Hopefully already with 8.0

First at all: HD44780 is finally supported?
Is it required a I2C interface?
There is an official LCD connection documentation for pinout? (that´s a very big lack of documentation in webpage for mobiflight begginers and to know supported hardware components.

Basically this must get commented by Sebastian himself !

I just can offer some basic informations !

1. I2C Interface
Our Displays work over I2C and i not think this will change.
So in simple words..... Your Display must support this..... Else it will not work with MF

2. Size
Technical i think Sebastian will allow it if it´s possible.
BUT
We still have a Bug in observation in case of a possible Memory/Cache Overflow.
16*2 Displays work fine.... 20*4 can occure in issues.... 20*4 DUAL ( 2 on a Board) definitly occure in Issues at he moment.
So i would say a 40*4 also is NOT possible A.T.M. in current System.
But in case this is a BUG we hopefully can solve it. Whatever ..... No garantee on that point.... If Bug remains then 40*4 is definitly not possible !

3. Stop Think about Arduino IDE.
Yes.... It´s a nice information that Arduino and the Library support it.... But thats no matter !
Sebastian decide himself where the limits are.
Extremly..... If he say tomorow 4 and 2 Line Displays no longer should be supported then this is a simple fact and only 1 liners are working in the future whatever Arduino could handle many more.

In easy words.... Its his Software..... Its his decission ..... So this is the only Truth !
