Just wondering what Licence people use for P3d, Academic or Professional? Looking to upgrade from FSX, whats the views on this? and does PMDg 737, Orbx. rex etc work well?

Hi Ridgeandgable,

why don't they not work? The addons are depending on the release not the stage of expansion. Professional and Pro are for developer not for pilots ;)

Hi Stephen

Not sure if they do work, that's why I was asking. So you think I should be good with the Academic Licence?

Whats your personal view on P3d over FSX?

I've got mobiflight working perfectly with FSX and PMDG, am I silly to change now, or is it a wise move? Is there any issues with converting mobi to p3d, are the offsets / eventIDs the same, or do I need to start again?

Any help much appreciated.

P3D is effectiv the "tuned" FSX. In V4 its also 64 Bit ( The biggest problem in FSX is that is only 32 Bit)

Biggest benefit for us is that P3D is 100% Compatible with FSUIPC and thats the "compiler" we use for Mobiflight.
So in simple words.... A Swap from FSX to P3D is recommend.
I personaly also looking forward to change to P3D.

****
About Licence.
Both are the same.
Its like a price reduced Version for students.
Don´t know if you need to confirm you are a student by a document.... Whatever i will simply use the Prof Version.
For me a Software i will use 1000 Hrs ore more i like to pay for the regulary price.... But here everybody must decide himself.

***
About AddOns.
In case P3D is effectiv the same like FSX most of AddOns will work. Problem is the jump from 32 Bit to 64 Bit with V4. As i know here addOns stop working but normaly most of them also have a Update to the 64 Bit Version.

NOTE: AddOn puplishers like to earn Money. For example PMDG nor allow us to use a AddOn twice. If you own the B777 for FSX and you like to use it on P3D you must buy another "B777 P3D edition" for full price !
(I read it is possible to "hack" this by a rework of ini file of the old FSX Version .... But i don´t know if that is correct.)

******
Summary.
P3D is better and will be supported for multiple years.... FSX is death since 10 Years.
A Swap is recommend..... But think about some money you need to invest for new AddOns.
If you already own hundrets of AddOns its maby better to stay at FSX, If you just startup and you have not spent much money already then directly build on P3D!
Good Luck !

Hi Ridge,

It does not matter if you take the academic or professional license. The surface is the same in every case. The Pro and Pro plus are rather something for developers and in this respect for "only" pilots completely ok.

P3D V4.4 / 5 is largely a 64-bit application, while the FSX is "only" a 32-bit application. If the FSX runs flawlessly, you can continue to run it for a while in parallel, because many addons for P3D need to be purchased new. Pay attention to a new acquisition on the fact that you for an update of the FSX version on P3DV4 / 5, the manufacturers may offer cheaper prices.

At first I also had FSX, FSUIPC4 and MobiFlight, which ran perfectly. The disadvantage of a 32-bit application on a 64-bit system (Win7 / 10) may be disadvantageous.
After switching to P3D, FSUIPC5 and MobiFlight, everything was the same as under the FSX. However, I had to buy the PMDG and some sceneries again (note update offers!).
From FSX to P3D nothing needs to be converted with MobiFlight, as long as you use the same planes as before. EventIDs and offsets are the same, sometimes new values were added. As far as MF is concerned, nothing needs to be changed.

It is neither stupid nor wise to continue using FSX or switching to P3D. This is a purely personal attitude. There are also users who use the FS9. Everyone has to make that decision for themselves.

If you run both simulators in parallel (that's possible), you can always use one or the other and compare yourself.
If you have the opportunity to go to P3D, just do it and decide for yourself. But you have to assume one thing: the FSX will not be developed in any case and will be frozen. P3D is already in version 4.5 and will be further developed. P3D would be more future-oriented. It also depends on your financial resources. If you already have a lot of money in the FSX (sceneries and other addons), then you can not have everything new from one day to the next. With a parallel installation but you can gradually update the FSX things on P3D and have at some point the same stage. That would be the time to say goodbye to the FSX.
Hope this approach helps you.
Grüße,
Stephan

Thanks for your input guys

I'm now the proud of owner of p3d Professional and another copy of PMDG NGX :D

I had a quick look at p3d after I set it up and wish I done it years ago, Although I am a fan of FS9 and FSX, my breath was taken away by p3d. Graphics are so much nicer, frames went from 25 in FSX to over 80 in p3d with most of the sliders turned up to full settings.

Everything is running smooth, now the transition begins with installing ORBX, Rex, Active Sky, voxatc and of course my favorite, Mobiflight.

Thanks for your help tho, as a side note... I will run with FSX for a while longer tho.

I'm with you pizman, For something you will spend 1000's of enjoyable hours on, its worth every penny

Cheers lads

Nice to hear.

About Addons...
I hope you get not in trouble. Maby its also helpfull for other users if you shortly report your experience.
Rex, Orbx ASN and so on are verry famous. A short information if FSX Version is compatible or a note if there is a reduced upgrade price would be interesting.
So we not need to search every AddOn by ourself and thats make a decision much more easy for us.

About Mobiflight.

In Case Mobiflight talkes to FSUIPC and FSUIPC v5 is basicly identical to V4 there should be no problem.
The only critical part can be a in the future.
In some lists i already see Offsets with more then 4 Numbers . Until Version 5.xxx the limit was 16 bit... So 0000 till FFFF .
If this get increased to 24 or 32 Bit then Mobiflight can´t work with Offsets above FFFF.
But pretty sure then Sebastian will also change the logic if this point is reach.
Good Luck !

Everything is now installed and working the best I've ever seen.

FSUIPC 5 was flawless, there are upgrade offers available for this if you were fully registered with FSX
PMDG 737 NGX - Had to purchase a new copy for p3D V4+ which was $89.99, a bit annoyed by that as you only pay $69.99 for FSX
ORBX - No additional costs, just migrate within the software, again, install was flawless
REX Worldwide Airports - Same as FSX, all setup and flawless
Active Sky - Crossover upgrade available at additional cost of $25, Installation was simple and flawless
VoxATC - FSX Serial works, so need to re-purchase, just download Voxatc for P3D v4

So easy to install everything, not had a single issue, Not a blip with Mobi, simply double click to open as usual, and jobs done. Responds quicker to P3D than it did with FSX for some reason, usually I saw a little delay in turning heading / speed knob if I went to fast, but with P3D, this doesn't happen, all very responsive

Hope it helps
I'm away to fly in a smooth sim :D
